Expanded Perlite in the Construction Industry

Expanded perlite, a white, granular material with a honeycomb structure, is created from perlite ore through preheating and rapid high-temperature roasting. This process involves rapidly heating crushed perlite ore, causing the internal moisture to vaporize and expand within the softened glassy mineral. As a result, expanded perlite with a porous structure is formed, with a volume expansion of 10-30 times, making it a lightweight, non-metallic material ideal for various construction applications:

  • Inorganic Thermal Insulation Mortar

Inorganic insulation mortar is primarily composed of vitrified microbeads (closed-cell expanded perlite), polymer powder, dispersible fibers, and other additives. This mortar has become widely adopted nationwide, meeting energy-saving standards of 50-65%. It is currently the leading inorganic wall insulation material on the domestic market due to its excellent insulating properties.

  • Lightweight Insulating Acoustic Boards

Expanded perlite is combined with organic or inorganic binders and additives to create insulation and soundproofing boards. These boards offer excellent thermal insulation, sound absorption, and fire resistance, making them ideal for indoor decoration. They are lightweight, moisture-resistant, corrosion-resistant, and cost-effective, making them popular for reducing noise in various building interiors.

  • Expanded Perlite Foam Products

Expanded perlite foam products use low-alkali cement as a binder and expanded perlite as lightweight aggregate. Reinforced with fibers and additives like water reducers and flocculants, the perlite foam mixture can be molded into blocks or applied directly to walls and ceilings. These foam products offer better insulation, soundproofing, and fire resistance than typical perlite cement products and are more durable than plastic alternatives.

  • Insulating Perlite Boards

Insulating boards made from expanded perlite combined with inorganic binders and additives have excellent fire resistance, moisture resistance, and insulation properties. These boards are widely used in residential and commercial buildings for wall and roof insulation, offering a long-lasting, lightweight solution for energy-efficient construction.

  • Fireproof Coatings

Using fine expanded perlite particles as the primary material, these coatings are enhanced with specific additives to improve fireproofing. These coatings are used for steel structures, surface finishes, and tunnel fireproofing, providing effective passive fire protection.

  • Functional Coatings

Expanded perlite can be incorporated into functional coatings, providing benefits like humidity control and antimicrobial properties. These coatings are used on walls and other surfaces to improve indoor air quality and create a healthier environment.

  • Perlite Fireproof Doors

Fireproof doors made from expanded perlite powder and high-temperature adhesives are designed as replacements for aluminum silicate and rock wool cores. These perlite fireproof door cores are lightweight, non-combustible, and highly fire-resistant (withstand temperatures above 1100°C). They are suitable for various applications requiring high fire and soundproofing performance, such as hotels, offices, schools, and hospitals.

  • Phase-Change Energy Storage Material

Expanded perlite serves as a carrier for multi-phase change materials within its porous structure, creating a thermal composite material with energy storage and insulation properties. This material is ideal for wall insulation and plaster, enhancing energy efficiency for sustainable building solutions.
